Local residents who frequent the U.S. Post Office at 19 E. Wea St. in Paola may have noticed a new face behind the counter.

Randy McHenry, 47, of Shawnee, began work at the Paola post office Dec. 1 as officer in charge.

“The former postmaster isn’t officially retired, so I’m sitting in until that process goes through,” he said.

However, McHenry said he anticipates continuing with the Paola post office long term.

McHenry has been employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 22 years.

“I’ve worked at various offices, the last office being in Kansas City, Mo. — the district office,” he said. “I’ve been a postmaster before, at Smithville, Mo., near Liberty. It was the same size of office, a little bit smaller community.”

Currently, he and the other Paola postal workers are helping Santa Claus with the letters received from boys and girls in the area.

“Right outside my door is a red, old-time mailbox. Kids come in and drop their Santa letters in that box,” McHenry said. “Mark (Minden), the clerk, gets the letters out every day, and he helps with getting them together.”

As part of their special holiday services, McHenry and his team make sure that the letters with return addresses receive answers and send the Santa letters to those addresses, as well.

So far, he said, 41 letters have come in for Old Saint Nick, and they anticipate quite a few more by the Christmas holiday.
