It’s good to hear people have been generous in donating to the Paola Association for Church Action’s food pantry throughout the past month, but that need will continue to be vital throughout the holiday season.

Treasurer Dorothy Chancellor said last week that donations have been plentiful, but she also said she has seen several new faces this year, a sign that Miami County isn’t immune to the nation’s economic downturn.

Students and congregation members at Holy Trinity in Paola were the most recent contributors to PACA, donating both food and money raised at a carnival organized by eighth-grade students. But several agencies throughout town, including the Paola United Way, also donate to PACA.

Last month, The First Presbyterian Church in Paola hosted the Heartland Presbytery’s quarterly meeting, and half of the $1,095 raised went to PACA.

The food pantry at My Father’s House in Paola also will require donations this winter. Local bus drivers recently helped out by having students bring food to donate on the bus in the hope of winning a popcorn party. The drivers collected more than 1,000 items for My Father’s House.

It certainly is understandable to cut back a bit on spending and hold off on big vacation plans during times when money is tight. But it is at those times, especially during the holiday season, when we all need to step up and give to those who are less fortunate.

Paola has always been a community that helps out its neighbors. Let’s keep that reputation throughout the holiday season this year.
