A few more families in need will be assured meals this holiday season, thanks to the efforts of students at Holy Trinity Catholic School in Paola.

In October, the eighth-grade class organized a carnival for its community service project in preparation for confirmation. Children of all ages played games and snacked on cotton candy.

The carnival raised about $1,600, and many of the students also donated mounds of non-perishable food items to the Paola Association for Church Action food pantry. Several items were collected at the Thanksgiving day mass.

Principal Eric White said the money was used for a number of things, including textbooks and school supplies, as well as helping out the school’s adopted child in Guatemala.

Eighth-grade teacher Luci Kennedy said some money was given to a crisis pregnancy center in Kansas City, and some also was given to PACA.

PACA treasurer Dorothy Chancellor was at the school last week to accept a $100 check and the collected food items from students. She said the students have always helped out PACA, with some even ringing the bells for collections during the holiday season, something PACA organizes.

Chancellor said it’s obvious times are tough because she’s seen a lot of new faces at the food pantry, but community members have been especially generous in the past month.

Not all of the donated food items came from students. White said a Monday night Bible study group also donated several items.
