The Paola USD 368 Board of Education approved a retirement savings plan for district employees during its Monday night meeting.

Business Manager Jimmy Hay provided a summary of the 403(b) plan’s primary elements and said all employees of the school district are eligible.

The plan will become effective Jan. 1, 2009. According to Hay’s report, CPI Qualified Plan Consultants Inc. has been selected as a third party administrator to provide compliance and common remitter services for employee contributions.

“This is to supplement KPERS and Social Security,” Hay said.

The board not only approved the plan, but authorized Hay to sign the agreement on behalf of USD 368.

In other business, the board decided to table discussion of a list of Board of Education goals until the January work session, which members agreed would take place at 6 p.m. Jan. 26, 2009.

During the meeting, Superintendent Rod Allen presented board members with information to help them understand terms being used and improvement programs currently being implemented by the school district.

These included a list of education acronyms and printed information on Quality Performance Accreditation and the plan for a Multi-Tiered System of Support.

Allen explained the MTSS as a three-tiered program designed to address students’ academic and behavioral development. He said the first level deals with approaches to help all students. The second tier involves intervention for students needing additional support, and the third tier calls for individual attention for students who need one-on-one support to succeed.

Allen also congratulated Paola High School Assistant Principal Frank Perbeck on receiving the regional Assistant Principal of the Year Award.

Following an executive session, the board accepted the resignation, effective Dec. 22, of Paola Middle School language arts teacher Ellen Welch.
