Angela (Paola High School freshman Crystal Thompson) sat on a bus stop bench singing “On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me,” while the only other person seated near her, Greysuit (Blake Jennings, a PHS sophomore), sat looking at her as if she were nuts. Or if to say to her, “Who would sit here on a bus stop bench singing around here?”

With nothing more than a homemade bus stop sign, a bench and small Christmas tree as the set on the Paola Middle School auditorium stage last Thursday night, the Paola Community Theater Group performed the first evening of a two-night run of “Last Stop ’Till Christmas,” a short play by Pat Cook.

Crystal and Blake joined a cast of adults, teenagers and children to offer their take on a simple play about people who simply want Christmas to be over. Thrown together by a desire to catch a bus, there was Mr. and Mrs. Loudmouth, the Shopper, the long-suffering mother and her brat daughter, a grandma and grandpa, and the young couple, Joisey and Goilfriend, who are in love.

Angela recognizes each person is dealing with his or her own problems and has lost the true meaning of the season. When two city workers place a Christmas tree near the stop, Angela takes out an ornament from her bag and promises each person that, by placing an ornament on the tree, their wish would come true.

“Last Stop ’Till Christmas” was the third play for the PCTG and the second play by co-producers Shelley Erickson and Kate Anderson. They said this one was a bit tougher to pull off because of the renovation work at the Paola Community Center. The cast never had a stage to practice on, so they are looking forward to the finished PCC.

PCC Director Chad Meyer encouraged the audience to call him or members of the PCTG if interested in acting.
“They are helping to create a list of programs at the PCC,” he said.
