First organized to benefit the Osawatomie flood victims, now two years in the making, the Salvation Army silent auction will become an annual event.

We presented more than $2,000 to the Miami County Salvation Army in 2007. The money was spent right here in Osawatomie in a matter of a week to aid flood victims.

Thanks to the support of community, we raised another $2,000 plus during our auction Saturday held in conjunction with the Osawatomie Rotary Club’s annual Pancake Feed.

This year, we decided to split the proceeds from the fund-raiser with the Miami County Salvation Army and the American Cancer Society.

Collecting the autographs, picture frames and putting them all together was a year-long process.

Saturday was the pay-off, seeing the excitement on everyone’s face as they looked at items we had signed by Dale Earnhardt, Tiger Woods, Miley Cyrus, Garth Brooks and many more.

Some of the framed pieces were headed for a wall that afternoon I am sure, but others would be wrapped and put under the Christmas tree to spread the joy even more.

That is the part the struck me as I thought about the event Saturday. Lori Massey, Kathy Troutman and I started this event to benefit the flood victims. It was a way of stopping to say these are my brothers and sisters and I have to do something, not waiting for someone else to do it, but doing our little part to make a difference.

To see the ripple affect it has is quite cool.

Joan Gorges of Hillsdale stopped me Saturday to visit about some of the NASCAR items she was bidding on for her angels.

I thought she was talking about her granddaughters. Gorges was talking about two girls names she got from the Cops for Tots angel tree.

How cool is that? To see their faces on Christmas morning would be a treat.

The ripple continues.

Osawatomie’s flood in 2007 cost Tom Brewer more than $40,000. He has supported our efforts since day one, purchasing a poster signed by Richard Petty last year and the Dale Earnhardt piece to hang next to it this year.

Who knows where the ripple ends? It doesn’t end here. The money spent at these auctions keeps spreading the joy. Through the Salvation Army, it will help make the Christmas season a little brighter for some local families.

Now that we have added the American Cancer Society, the money can help assist those in the fight of their lives and make a difference in the fight for a cure.

None of it happens without you and your bids.

Special thanks also goes out to all of the people who donated to our efforts, including local artist Ronnie Smith, Pigeon West, Emery’s Steakhouse, Gails Glass, TeamBank, El Tapatio, Angela and Paula.

Merry Christmas everyone. Don’t let the ripple affect end with you. Pass on the spirit of Christmas, even if it’s just a hello to someone on the street and a smile. It makes every day feel more like Christmas.
