GARDNER — A lot of young Paola High School Panthers got their first taste of high school wrestling Saturday in the Gardner-Edgerton Invitational.

The Panthers scored 72.5 points, placing 13th in the 16-team invitational featuring wrestling powers such as Omaha Burke and Bishop Carroll of Kansas.

It was a first good step for a team with so many new wrestlers, Paola coach Russell Hermreck said.

“Our efforts were outstanding,” Hermreck said. “For such a young team (five freshmen in starting lineup), we are performing things that are going to make us successful in the long run.

“I was impressed with the attitudes our wrestlers had during the tournament,” he said. “Our sport is about taking the mistakes and turning those into positives and learning from them. If each member can reflect on some of the mistakes he made during the match and try to fix them for the upcoming match, if they are open minded with this process, they can improve a great deal from match to match.

Dylan McKinney was 3-1, placing third at 112 pounds. He scored a 10-0 decision against Travis Schhwarting of Omaha Burke in the third-place match.

Mitch Mosley placed third at 140 pounds.

Seth Helliker was fourth at 160 pounds. He lost a 12-2 major decision to Dalton Stanley of Washburn Rural in the third-place match.

Spencer Trumbly placed fifth at 215 pounds. He scored an 8-1 decision against Austin Winner of Pittsburg in the fifth-place match.

“Seth Helliker, Mitch Mosley, Dylan McKinney and Spencer Trumbly had great tournaments,” Hermreck said. “Each of them had three or four wins to only one loss. We had several individuals who just ran into tough draw in their pool and were not able to make it out. That is the nature of the beast with wrestling a tough schedule early in the year.”

Chance Wilson placed sixth at 119 pounds. He was 2-2.

Other Paola results were:
103 pounds — Brian Ebeling was 0-2.
125 pounds — Tanner Staats was 2-2.
145 pounds — Eric Timpe was 0-3.
152 pounds — Tyler Henness was 0-4.
171 pounds — Brad Hall was 0-4.
189 pounds — Parker Staats was 1-3.
285 pounds — Tony Wilson was 0-4.
