Placing 10 wrestlers in 14 weight classifications, including four individual champions, was a strong start to the wrestling season as the Broncos took to the mats in the Spring Hill Invitational on Saturday.

Spring Hill dominated the lower weight classes, winning titles at 103, 112 and 112 pounds.

Michael Nemer won the 103-pound classification. Shane Squire placed first at 112 pounds. Aaron Barnes captured the title at 119 pounds. Cody Spader won the fourth crown, taking first place at 171 pounds.

Bishop-Miege, Blue Valley, Schlagel, Shawnee Mission South, Spring Hill and Sumner Academy competed in the tournament.

“As a team I was very pleased with our performance,” Spring Hill coach Tucker Woofter said. “As always, we have room for improvement everywhere. I know we have a young team, but I think they are tough kids and they love to work. We can do a lot with a group of kids like this.”

The event was great for the wrestlers and the fans, Woofter said. Wrestlers got a lot of matches to kick-off the season and the fans had an entire day of watching Broncos wrestling.

“I think a tournament like this is a great way to start the season off because every kid on the team gets five matches,” Woofter said. “A fan can come out and watch us compete and watch one mat all day and see nothing but spring hill kids. I think we have done a good job of trying to improve our community support. Our belief is that fan friendly events like this are a big reason for this improvement.”

Shane Slyter was second at 140 pounds. Ethan Heincker placed second at 145 pounds. Taylor Kttler was second at heavyweight. Austin Adkins placed third at 130 pounds. Charlie Briggs was third at 135 pounds. Jesse Chadwick finished third at 152 pounds.

The Broncos are back in action Friday and Saturday in the Eudora Invitational.
