COFFEYVILLE – An overachieving 2007-08 inaugural season for the Osawatomie/Paola boys’ swim team, in which they won the Independent League title and had one swimmer qualify for state, gave coach Sarah Dorsett a big confidence boost about her team’s abilities heading into its second season.

Dorsett felt good about her team’s chances to perform well at the Coffeyville meet Saturday. The results matched her confidence level, perhaps even exceeded it.

Winning seven of the meet’s 11 events, Osawatomie/Paola won the team title, finishing with 452 points, which was 17 points more than runner-up Coffeyville Field-Kinley (435).

Alex Weatherbie, who qualified for the state meet in two events last season (50- and 100-yard butterfly), didn’t waste any time punching his ticket for state for the second straight season in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing in a personal-best time of 23.22 seconds. He also swam to a personal record in the 100-meter freestyle (58.88 seconds). It was the first time he has finished the event in less than one minute, in the process knocking 12 seconds off his personal record. He fell just 0.75 seconds of qualifying for state in the event.

Dorsett was experiencing goose bumps while watching Weatherbie swim.

“I was getting chest pains, it was so awesome,” Dorsett said. “We need to find out what he is eating for breakfast, and do the same. I am, to say the least, very pleased.”

Weatherbie also struck for gold as a member of the 200- and 400-yard freestyle teams. Weatherbie, Daniel Dorsett, Jared Auten and Gus Hart teamed up to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1:53.78. Weatherbie, Hart, Auten and James Teuscher combined to win the 400-yard freestyle in 3:39.08.

Overall, Auten won four events. He struck for gold in the 100-yard freestyle (58.88) and was also part of the winning 200-yard freestyle team (1:46.65). Teuscher, Alec Burford and Stetson Jackson were the other members. Jackson also won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:16.28).

Dorsett won the 200-yard individual medley relay in 2:33.65.

Key contributions were also made by those Osawatomie/Paola swimmers who finished between second and 16th places, allowing Osawatomie/Paola to win the team title by 17 points.

“We had a significant number of points scored by those who placed no higher than fourth, which is important to win a meet,” Dorsett said.
