TOPEKA — Shooting 26 percent from the floor, the Spring Hill High School girls’ basketball team had an uphill struggle at Topeka-Hayden on Friday night. Spring Hill failed to hit double digits in each of the first three quarters, digging themselves a 19-point (40-21) hold they could not climb out of in a 51-36 loss to Topeka-Hayden. Slowing down the Wildcat offense would have taken some of the pressure off the Broncos’ offense, Spring Hill coach Clay Frigon said. “As a team, we still have to get better defensively, which will also help us out on the offensive end,” he said. The low shooting percentage was probably in part due to Topeka-Hayden and a mix of first-game jitters, Frigon said. “Their defense was good, but we came out very tight and shot under 30 percent from the field for the game,” he said. “Now that the first game is over, hopefully we can relax and just play basketball. They are a very fast team and play an aggressive defense that we weren’t able to compensate for.” The Topeka-Hayden Wildcats went on a 17-9 run in the first eight minutes and kept running against the Broncos. Topeka-Hayden added to its lead with a 10-5 run in the second quarter and pushed it to a 19-point game with a 13-7 advantage in the third quarter. The Broncos outscored the Wildcats 15-11 in the fourth quarter. “It was great to see the girls push through the fourth quarter,” Frigon said. “This early in the season, we have to try new things and just see what works for us. The fourth quarter revealed a lot of things about our team.” Spring Hill had tough night shooting, sinking 14 of 52 field goal attempts. Topeka-Hayden held a 16-12 edge at the foul line. Spring Hill made eight of 12 free throw attempts. Topeka-Hayden hit 16 of 37 free throw shots. Erika Simpson led Spring Hill offensively, scoring 10 points. Rhi Lloyd had seven points. Other players scoring for the Broncos were Alli Cutting, Stacey Czerdea, Mollie Ravnikar, Courtney Swope, Jami Hodge and Brennan Swiderski. Spring Hill (0-1) is on the road this week in the Osawatomie Invitational.
