TOPEKA — In its season opener Friday night, the Spring Hill High School boys’ basketball team faced a big problem — Topeka-Hayden’s 6-foot, 9-inch center Sam Hund. All Hund did was make 10 of 14 field goals, three of five free-throws, and score a career-high 23 points. He also grabbed 10 rebounds as the Wildcats defeated the Spring Hill Broncos 77-55. “Sam Hund was a force,” Spring Hill coach Rick O’Neil said. “With him, they had the ability to play above the rim more than most teams we will play. “When you have an opportunity to play a team with the qualities they have, it exposes any weakness that need corrected,” he said. “I was encouraged at the effort our players exhibited through the entire game.” Topeka-Hayden is the defending state champion in Class 4A. The Wildcats never let the Broncos get into an offensive rhythm, holding Spring Hill to 33 percent shooting on the night (19-56). The Wildcats opened the game with a 20-11 run in the first quarter. Spring Hill was outscored in the second quarter but stayed close with an 18-15 score in the frame. Topeka-Hayden owned the third quarter, pulling away from Spring Hill with a 25-8 run. Spring Hill closed out the game with a 21-14 run in the fourth quarter. Colton Ghumm made six of 12 field goals and was two-for-two at the line, finishing with 16 points for the Broncos. Mitch Watson hit double figures with 13 points. Derek Koehn scored 12 points. Other players scoring for Spring Hill were Jordan Miller, James Beard, Kaleb Anderson, Brett Etherton and Patrick Donahue. Spring Hill (0-1) is on the road this week in the Osawatomie Invitational.
