Holiday cheer spread like wildfire Friday in Spring Hill’s schools. The Spring Hill High School Madrigals displayed their musical talents while caroling at Spring Hill elementary, intermediate, middle and high schools, as well as Daybrook Child Care Center and the Board of Education building. The Madrigals ensemble is comprised of the top 24 selected singers at the high school. Singers are judged each year, and the top 24 are selected to be part of the Madrigals. The group began practicing their holiday caroling the second week of October, said choir director Georann Whitman. “I know, it’s wrong on so many levels to sing Christmas music before Halloween, but it is a hazard of the choral music business,” she said. Each caroling stop took anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes. The Madrigals began by singing carols for approximately 15 minutes then took requests from the audience. “If no one requests “The 12 Days of Christmas,” we probably get through 15 to 20 songs in that time frame,” Whitman said. Each stop is different from the rest. Carolers perform in auditoriums, cafeterias or pods or set up singing posts outside classrooms while students flood the halls, Whitman said. The caroling tour provides a feeling of community service for many of the Madrigals while going back in time to the feeling they had as youngsters treated to the sweet music of visiting Madrigals, Whitman said. “The kids are always so excited to have us come, and it is one of the Madrigals’ favorite performance opportunities,” she said. “We get a chance to be good ambassadors for our school and our district and show folks the good things that teenagers do. It is also a good recruiting tool, students see what a positive impact music can have and want to be involved someday.” The Madrigals’ calendar is looking pretty packed this month. The group performed at the Overland Park Arboretum luminary walk Saturday. On Sunday, the Madrigals caroled at Hillsdale Presbyterian Church, Spring Hill Baptist Church and Spring Hill Methodist Church during regular Sunday morning services. This week, the group will be performing at least twice during their class period caroling at Olathe business holiday parties. The Madrigals hold their winter holiday concert at 7 p.m. Monday in the high school auditorium.
