Spring Hill Public Works posted an updated emergency snow route on the city’s Web site this month. While changes to the route weren’t significant, Public Works Director Rory Hale said each year the route grows a little. Hale also wants to warn residents of a salt shortage. Salt, typically used to melt ice and snow in the winter, is low in supply and high in demand around the nation this year. Hale said Spring Hill has plenty of salt on hand for the winter, but the supply is dependent on this year’s weather. The Kansas Department of Transportation released a statement in October about the state’s shortage and difficulty obtaining salt. “There were so many wide-ranging snow and ice storms the last two winters across the entire Midwest, KDOT is now forced to compete against other DOTs, city and county maintenance departments for salt,” said Peter Carttar, assistant bureau chief in construction and maintenance. The statement went on to say KDOT would use salt conservatively so it can be available throughout the winter. Hale echoed the statement and said because of the salt shortage, the city may not be able to replenish the stockpile like they would like to. If that is the case, salt usage would focus mainly on the main emergency snow route. “We’ll continue to plow the side streets but apply minimal salt and sand,” Hale said. “In the worst case scenario, we would apply none.” Hale estimated the city used 70 tons of salt and sand last year.
