Unless Miami County residents are friends with somebody who owns a fleet of reindeer and a sleigh, they have only a few days left to mail packages and ensure they’ll arrive in time for Christmas. Randy McHenry, officer in charge of the Paola Post Office, said Monday the date to mail packages internationally in time for Christmas has already passed. That was Dec. 12.As for the United States, postal officials are listing Friday as the last day to mail packages and ensure their arrival by Christmas. Several residents on Monday weren’t taking any chances. A line of people, many grasping packages and red and green envelopes, started to form at the Paola Post Office when it opened Monday morning, and the line didn’t let up much throughout what is widely considered one of the busiest postal days of the year. “We’ve been busy since we opened at 8:30,” McHenry said Monday morning. For residents wanting to ensure quick delivery, McHenry said express mail is their best option. “It’s pretty much guaranteed next day service,” he said. He added that for the past two weeks a truck has been making a special trip to Paola at noon to pick up mail and deliver it to a processing plant in Kansas City, Mo. Typically, the trucks come at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., but the additional trip was added to relieve some of the pressure put on the plant when a sea of packages and letters arrive each night during Christmas time. McHenry said he’s seen everything from boxes that jingle to packages that play Christmas music, all signs that the holiday shipping season is upon us. His favorite part of the holidays though is the letters to Santa that the post office collects in a special red mailbox at its main building in Paola. “It’s funny to read what the kids write,” he said. “One said, ‘I’ve been good ... sometimes.’” The post office already has collected 150 letters to Santa, and officials plan to respond to each one. Letters must be dropped off by Friday to get a response, McHenry said.
