Ongoing structural concerns at Shipman Liquor in Paola once again sparked a lengthy discussion by Paola City Council members last week.

The store’s retail liquor license is up for renewal, but recent fire safety inspections have turned up several issues, many of which have continued to arise during the past three years.

Seven main problems, according to city documents, are holes in the ceilings and walls, debris in the second-floor stairwell, roof leaks, unsafe floor loads, floor in rear storeroom appears in danger of collapse, open wires and electrical box and improper storage under stairs.

Council members, at the Dec. 9 meeting, expressed concern about renewing the license while several of the same issues remain unresolved. Fire Chief Andy Martin also said the building is in danger of injuring someone if parts of it collapse, according to city minutes.

Council members eventually voted 3 to 1 to renew the retail liquor license for the business at 115 W. Wea St., subject to the satisfactory completion of the required fire safety inspection and resolution of the seven deficiencies outlined in the inspection notice.

Councilman Pete Bell voted against the motion, stating he thinks additional time, such as 90 days, should be given to resolve the issue with the floor.

In other business at the Dec. 9 meeting, council members:
  • Approved a $1,998 invoice to be paid from the Goss Donation Fund to pay for two airline respirators for the Paola Volunteer Fire Department. The Goss family recently donated $200,000 to the city to pay for improvements to the fountain and gazebo on Park Square, as well as new equipment for the fire department.
  • Approved a $201,968.69 pay estimate for the Paola Justice Center. City Manager Jay Wieland said the move-in date is Jan. 5.
  • Agreed to change the name of Cedar Court in Hidden Meadows Estates to Hidden Meadows Court.
