The Miami County Farm Tour Executive Committee encourages area agricultural producers — both farmers and ranchers — to participate in the 2009 Spring Farm Tour.

Applications for this family-oriented event can be obtained through the Miami County Economic Development office in the Miami County Administration Building, 201 S. Pearl St., in Paola. They must be returned on or before Jan. 9.

The tour offers families an opportunity to spend time outdoors, enjoying the rural settings of Miami County.

The committee hopes each participating agricultural producer will offer activities for the entire family.

The self-guided tour celebrates the county’s diversity and highlights local farm products found along the back roads of Miami County.

The 2008 Spring Farm Tour reported increases in almost every category. Total money spent in Miami County during last spring’s tour was $8,194 compared to $6,942 the previous fall. The average number of registered tour goers in 2008 was 66 per stop, up from 56.1 during the 2007 fall tour. Average group size in 2008 was 3.2, exceeding the 2.7 average group size the fall before. The average number of stops visited last year was 2.67 compared to 1.97 in fall 2007. Sales reported by 2008 spring tour stops totaled $5,000, while fall 2007 sales were totaled at $2,600, although that number is incomplete.

Farm Tour Executive Committee Chairman Mike Martin said he and the other committee members hope to maintain that momentum and build on last year’s success.

They anticipate Slow Food USA will be back on board and will have its chefs preparing samples of various products offered at the tour stops.
