EUDORA — Just like a shark, Paola’s Sharky Slyter smelled blood and no one was about to get in his way.

Wrestling at 130 pounds in the Eudora Tournament of Champions, the Panther senior rolled through his bracket, including his championship match against Louisburg’s Bryce Hood. Slyter took the title with a 5-1 decision over Hood to complete his 6-0 day.

Slyter’s day was just one of many bright developments for the Panther squad during the two-day tournament. Paola qualified five for the final day of wrestling and finished 11th out of 24 teams with 127 points.

Dylan McKinney (112), Tanner Staats (125) and Anthony Floyd (285) each finished sixth overall and Seth Helliker finished eighth at 160 pounds.

Slyter’s road to the title started Friday with three easy wins in the round robin bracket over Lawrence’s Spencer Board, Holton’s Kane Lovvorn and Eudora’s Jackson Wiley. The road didn’t get too much tougher on Saturday.

Slyter opened bracket action with a 12-7 victory over Rossville’s Kiefer Hurlan. He then toyed with Lansing’s Spencer Blew for a 25-10 technical fall and then battled Hood for the 130-pound crown.

At 112 pounds, McKinney fell to Mill Valley’s Trevor Boyer in a 10-3 decision, but rebounded for an 14-11 overtime win over Blue Valley’s Logan Bjorgo. Losses to Prairie View’s Bo Newport, and Wellsville’s Jerimiah Breen in the fifth-place match ended his day.

Staats lost to eventual champion Cody Phillips from Effingham in the first round of bracket action, but later pinned De Soto’s Zack Atchison to garner his lone win Saturday.

Floyd battled in a tough heavyweight class, and got off to a good start with a 3-1 victory over Baldwin’s Jesse Austin on Saturday, but then suffered three straight losses, including a 5-3 overtime loss to Sumner Academy’s Sharrone Berry in the fifth-place match.
