GARDNER — Center Kelsey Slawson scored a game-high eight points to lead the Paola Middle School seventh-grade girls’ junior varsity basketball team to a 23-7 victory against Spring Hill to win the tournament title. It was a tight game at the start, with the Panthers taking a 5-3 edge in the first quarter Dec. 6. Both teams scored two points in the second quarter. Already leading 7-5, a 10-2 run in the third quarter put Paola in the driver’s seat. Paola put a bow on the victory, holding Spring Hill scoreless in the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run. Heather Clark scored five points. Jessica Kramer and Alicia Morgan each had four points. Kaylee Hill had two points. Paola defeated Wheatridge in the first round, 26-8. Kramer led the way with eight points. Slawson added seven points. Michelle Macke had four points. Other players scoring for Paola were Clark, Heather Tracy, Morgan and Hill. Playing for the tournament title Panther basketball team were Madison Auten, Heather Clark, Lauren Frederick, Kaylee Hill, Jessica Kramer, Michelle Macke, Alicia Morgan, Kelsey Slawson, Heather Tracy and Jennifer Wisniewski. Alyssa Jackson is the team manager. Paola is coached by Jody Garrison and John Ozier.
