The Fontana City Council hired Brenda Rose as Fontana’s new part-time city clerk Thursday night, but it is still up in the air whether she will remain in that position.

Shortly after assuming the city clerk’s duties, Rose was offered full-time employment requiring Saturday work, but Saturday is the only day Fontana City Hall is open.

Mayor Darline Carter said the city is trying to reach an agreement that would allow Rose to work both positions, but said city hall would not change its hours to accommodate her schedule. If a suitable compromise cannot be reached, Carter said, the position would likely be offered to the council’s second choice.

Carter also said she was pleased with the hire, and either of the two candidates under consideration after the first round of interviews Dec. 8 would have been excellent city clerk choices.

Four council members approved Rose’s hiring Thursday night. Council member Jon Beachy was absent.

The council also voted to give the city treasurer the authority to spend no more than $2,000 to replace city hall’s computers, which Carter said had become obsolete. The mayor also said one laptop and one desktop will be purchased for that amount.
