Two burn patients were transported to the University of Kansas Medical Center early Thursday morning after a fire destroyed their rental house at 24399 W. 215th St. in Spring Hill.

Miami County Emergency Medical Services Chief Jason Jenkins said he did not know the extent of the injuries, only that they were not critical. The patients were not identified.

Johnson County Fire Districts 1 and 2 and fire companies from Olathe and Paola responded. Miami County EMS and Johnson County MED-ACT assisted.

Fire District No. 2 Chief Jeff Johnson said the house was a total loss. The first responders arrived at 4:03 a.m. to find the house engulfed in flames. The fire was closed by 10:07 a.m.

Johnson said the occupants were lucky to get out.

“That was the good news,” he said.

The bad news was the packed snow and icy road conditions.

“It’s incredible we even got there. One of our fire trucks slid down a hill and went in a ditch and had to be pulled out. What a mess,” he said.
