Although families are adopted by various organizations during the holiday season, many people still go without. That is where Last Minute Christmas Shop, located in Lenexa, comes into play. Last Minute Christmas Shop provides families with toys and clothing for newborns up to children 16 years old who did not receive assistance from any other agencies, according to Spring Hill representative Stevie Morris. This includes clothing, new shoes and new educational toys. Dan Baird and Alex Munday drove down to pick up the collected items and return them to the Multi-Service Center at 87th Street in Lenexa. Social organizations and churches have been adopting families since October. “But yesterday was the deadline. Anybody not adopted has now been referred to the Last Minute Christmas Shop,” Morris said. Spring Hill citizens once again came through, Morris said. “The community turnout was fantastic. So now, we’re taking all of what we’ve collected up for the rest of the county. So many people and companies came through, like Embarq and the Clorox plant,” she said. Many companies sent employees down to help. “Mid-Am also purchased 85 hams for families,” Morris said. When one family was asked what they wanted for Christmas, the answer from every child was space heaters, Morris said. “Volunteers went shopping and got the space heaters and more. This is truly a sign of the times, when they ask for space heaters,” she said.
