Darrell D. Cuthbertson, 71, died unexpectedly due to a heart attack Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at his home in Osawatomie. He was born June 20, 1937, in Miami County to George Ernest and Lena Marie Yackle Cuthbertson, and he lived in the Osawatomie and Paola areas all his life. He was a 1956 graduate of Paola High School. He attended Fort Scott Community College and played football. While living in Fort Scott, he worked for Gas Service Co. He also served for several years in the Kansas Army National Guard. He married Gerry Johnson on June 17, 1960, and they became the parents of five daughters. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1975. He married Dorothy Lee Williamson on March 5, 1976, at Pearl Street Baptist Church in Paola. They moved to Osawatomie and attended the Southern Baptist Church there. They enjoyed 32 years of life together with their families. He worked for Taylor Forge and Pittman in the early 1960s and then worked for the Gas Service Co. of Merriam until he took early retirement in 1996. After his retirement, he delivered newspapers for the Miami County Republic, worked with his wife, Dorothy, at Holloman’s Laundry and performed service for Red’s Security at Taylor Forge. He loved to play cards with family and friends, and he always enjoyed being in the country, where he lived and worked with his family on their farm near Lake Miola. He also worked for many different farmers, including Marvin Allen and Lyle DuBois. He enjoyed quail hunting with his friends when he had the time. He cut and sold firewood to many Miami County and Johnson County residents and he enjoyed selling Knapp/Mason shoes to professional people, including his co-workers and employees at KCP&L. He and Dorothy enjoyed traveling to Branson, Mo., and Silver Dollar City and spent time at their condos in Kimberling City and Ozark Mountain in Missouri. He enjoyed dancing at the Pla-Mart with family and friends. He was also a trivia buff. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jill Ann Holmes. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Lee of the home; his five daughters, Ava Keimig of Paola, Kelly Cuthbertson of Olathe, Connie Kimzey of Parker, Carmine Claar of La Cygne, and Carolee Cuthbertson of Warrensburg, Mo. He is also survived by four stepdaughters, Linda Kern of Osawatomie, Sherry DeNoon of Topeka, Susan Cherry of Manhattan, Kan., and Dorothy Louise Brake of Osawatomie; two sisters, Dailene Thornburgh of Overbrook, Kan., and Jana Hamilton of Liberal, Kan.; a brother, Kevin Cuthbertson of Paola; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. He will be missed greatly by his family and friends. A celebration of life service will be held today from 4 to 6 p.m. at Osawatomie Southern Baptist Church, 701 S. First St. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Darrell Cuthbertson Memorial Fund.
