Spring Hill Police Chief Mitch Hofmann reminds everyone that the joys of the holiday season can end quickly — sometimes even tragically — when someone drinks too much and climbs behind the steering wheel to drive.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says in December 2007, 992 people were killed in accidents involving drivers or motorcycle operators with blood alcohol levels of .08 or higher.

Even if they are lucky enough not to hurt or kill themselves or someone else, drunken drivers can end up arrested and jailed — a miserable way to spend the holidays.

Hofmann recommends designating a sober driver and not allowing friends to drive drunk as just two of several steps toward avoiding a tragic accident or an arrest. Other important tips include:
  •     Plan ahead. Whenever you expect to drink, give your designated sober driver your car keys.
  •     If you’ve been drinking, call a taxi, use mass transit or call a sober friend or family member to get you home safely.
  •     Promptly report drunken drivers you see on the roadways to law enforcement authorities.
  •     Wearing your seat belt or using protective gear while riding your motorcycle is your best defense against a drunken driver.
There is no excuse for drunken driving, so think before driving.
