Spring Hill Police Chief Mitch Hofmann reminds everyone that the joys of the holiday season can end quickly — sometimes even tragically — when someone drinks too much and climbs behind the steering wheel to drive. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says in December 2007, 992 people were killed in accidents involving drivers or motorcycle operators with blood alcohol levels of .08 or higher. Even if they are lucky enough not to hurt or kill themselves or someone else, drunken drivers can end up arrested and jailed — a miserable way to spend the holidays. Hofmann recommends designating a sober driver and not allowing friends to drive drunk as just two of several steps toward avoiding a tragic accident or an arrest. Other important tips include:
