Johnson County Fire District No. 2 recently purchased two new ambulances designed to meet the needs of both patients and crew. One unit is stationed at the Spring Hill Fire Department at 207th and Webster streets, and the other at Johnson County Fire District No. 2 in Stilwell.

The new units were designed to meet all safety regulations, said Fire Captain Jerame Frank, a committee member who helped with design of the new units.

“Both units are a safe box meant to protect the patient and the crew,” he said.

The $180,000 cost per unit went into the back compartment, known as “the box,” complete with florescent lights and safer seating for the crew, while working on a patient.

“These were better built than many we looked at from Braun Industries in Ohio and actually less expensive than many we looked at. Basically, this cost is comparable to what is out there,” Frank said.

Patients, he said, are better protected with the new power cots.

“They were designed to prevent back fatigue and reduce any kind of back injuries,” he said.

Drivers may notice the new chevron, or an inverted V, striping on the rear with large reflective designs to meet new safety standards.

“This way,” Frank said, “people can see the ambulance better on the highway.”
