Racing before an enthusiastic hometown crowd at Kemper Arena on Jan. 5, Dennis Jonon gave his fans something to cheer about.

He was fighting for the final two qualifying spots in his first heat of the night, trying to advance to the Arenacross Lites feature event.

Jonon was able to qualify, heading back to the pits to regroup for the feature.

He got off to a great start in the 25-lap event and the track announcer kept calling the fans’ attention to his position on the track with, “the local kid,” as Jonon challenged for the lead on the race track.

When he finished the final lap through the jumps, turns and bumps, Jonon flew over the main jump at the finish line on his Honda in second place during the Toyota AMA Arena
cross Series action.

“Hearing all of those people cheering for me was pretty amazing,” Jonon said. “I didn’t realize there would be that many people.”

He got out of the starting gate quickly and ended up with great position on the inside, pushing the pace on the eight-wide front row.

Jonon, a 2006 graduate of Spring Hill High School, has been racing professionally for two years.
