WICHITA — For the second consecutive year and third time in the history of the program, the Paola High School Panther boys’ track and field team left Cessna Stadium in Wichita with a trophy from the state track and field meet.

There was a familiar group battling for the team title, again.

Andale edged Paola by 3.5 points last year for the state championship. The Panthers were runner-up.

Paola placed third in the team standings in the two-day meet, which concluded May 24, scoring 44 points. Andale and Andover were co-champions, scoring 50 points apiece.
After sitting with the team trophy for pictures, Paola coach Mike Smith asked the athletes to take a moment to appreciate the significance of their achievement.

“Whenever you come back to Paola High School, your picture is going to be on this trophy,” he said.

The Panther boys placed third in the state, claiming the school’s third state track and field trophy. Paola was runner-up in 2007 and placed third in the state in 1997.

Joe Stephens led the Panthers with first-place medals in the high jump and 110-meter high hurdles and a second-place medal in the 300-meter hurdles. He also ran the opening leg on the team’s third-place 4x400-meter relay team.

Stephens scored 34 points for the team in the process of winning four state medals.

Alex Hermes, Daniel Haines, Mike Gamerl and Antonio Smith ran their way to a bronze in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3 minutes, 26.6 seconds.

Brint Hastert, Devon Wolf, Gamerl and Haines placed fifth in the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 8:22.29.

Smith placed fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.15.

Luke Wilson went into the shot put with the 13th best throw in the regionals, a 49-10 at Ottawa.

He added 4 inches to the mark, placing fifth in the state meet.

Haines placed seventh in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:33.15. He was 10th in the 800-meter run.

Paola competed at state in the 4x100-meter relay but failed to qualify for the finals. Running the relay were Trent Teusher, Skylar Hawkins, Kaleb Mueller and Smith. Paola was 11th in the preliminaries with a time of 45.30.

Mueller placed ninth in the preliminaries in the javelin with a mark of 164-6 and failed to make the finals by 3 inches.

Adam Henn and Will Randall went to state as alternates on the relays.
