John Edward Shields, 69, Blue Springs, Mo., died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Blue Springs.

He was born Dec. 28, 1938, to Byron B. and Freda Hayes Shields.

He was a Methodist by faith.

In the 1970s, he owned Shields Chevrolet and Buick. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, he owned and operated Shields Real Estate and Auctioneering.

His memberships include  the Army National Guard and the Lions Club of Paola. He enjoyed music, fishing and hunting. He was a volunteer at the Vesper Hall in Blue Springs.

He was preceded in death by a grandson and a sister, Betty Matney.

He is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Seaman of Blue Springs; four sons, Brett E. Shields of Pleasant Hill, Mo., Jeffrey E. Shields of Winter Park, Fla., and Spencer C. Shields and Wesley R. Shields, both of Olathe; a sister, Gloria Stone of Louisburg; 11 grandchildren; and his best friend and companion, Larisa Anders.

Services were Tuesday followed by burial in Paola Cemetery. Arrangements were by Meyers Funeral Chapel, 1600 W. Main St., Blue Springs, MO 64015, (816) 229-3276. Condolences may be left for the family at www.meyersfuneralchapel.com.
