Paola Public Works crews were busy during 2008, as the city continued with its recent emphasis on improving the city’s streets.

Crews hopped from resurfacing routes in the downtown area to laying down a new surface along portions of Angela Street in front of Paola High School.

One of the biggest projects was the resurfacing of 303rd Street near Paola’s public schools following the installation of new storm-water drainage pipeline next to the street earlier in the year.

Some of the routes that were repaired include portions of Peoria, Pearl and Piankishaw streets, as well as a stretch of Old Kansas City Road in northern Paola. The roads have been repaired using a mill and overlay process that involves removing the top layer of pavement using the grinding action of a milling machine and placing new asphalt on top.

Residents also were pleased upon the recent completion of a complete reconstruction project along portions of Crestview Drive in northern Paola.

Keeping streets in good condition has been a priority for residents in the past who have completed city surveys, and officials have made a point of fulfilling their request by providing funds.

The city recently purchased a skid steer for the Paola Public Works Department to be used along with the city’s curb machine.
