Business in Paola got a new look in 2008, as some stores and restaurants moved to new locations, others left for good and a few set up shop for the first time. Emery’s Steakhouse made headlines earlier this year when it was gutted by a fire in the early morning hours of Jan. 22. Owner Todd Emery had little choice but to look for a new location for the popular eatery that was located at 119 W. Peoria St. The search didn’t take long, as Emery’s opened up in April at its new location just down the street, 16 W. Peoria St. The building previously was occupied by Dock’s Landing, which is one of the businesses that didn’t make it in 2008. Wheat State Pizza and the Mirastar gas station in the parking lot of Paola’s Walmart also are no longer in business. But in their place came new businesses, such as Tre Sorella’s, a new boutique, and Trendsetters Hair Design Co., a new salon. A Paola couple also recently announced they plan to open a new coffee shop called The Country Bean in the Baptiste Commons shopping strip off Kansas Drive. Some businesses just have a new look, including The BBQ Shack, which moved from its spot at 705 N. Pearl St. to its new location in the shopping strip along Peoria Street next to the Best Western Hotel. Flooring America of Paola also recently announced it plans to move from 504 N. Silver St. to 1006 N. Pearl St., and Molly’s Table catering plans to open a storefront at 117 S. Pearl St.
