It was back to the drawing board for Paola volunteer firefighters in 2008, as initial plans to construct a new fire station on a city parking lot behind El Tapatio Restaurant were scrapped after the city purchased the former school building at 202 E. Wea St.

Paola tried to purchase the building from Paola USD 368 in August 2006, but school officials chose to accept the $250,000 bid from the School House Foundation, which was composed of officials from the First Presbyterian Church in Paola.

After losing out on the school building in 2006, and with a lack of options, city officials reluctantly chose to build the station on parking lot No. 1 south of Piankishaw Street. Many residents, including business owner Hannes Poetter, said the station would create a shortage of parking for Park Square merchants.

When the school building became available again in 2008 because of the School House Foundation’s plans not working out, the city jumped at the chance.

The city paid $267,500 for the building this time because of recorded improvements made to the structure, such as roof repairs, after it was purchased in 2006.

The plan is to transform the old school building into a fire station, but city officials have said the gymnasium will remain intact for public use.

There is no timetable yet for the station’s construction as city officials are still working out the details of what they want the station to look like.
