It’s not every day someone donates $200,000 to the city.

In fact, Paola Chamber of Commerce Director Carol Everhart didn’t believe it when she first heard the news.

It certainly was no joke, and thanks to the donation from former Paola resident Jackson W. Goss, the Paola Park Square looks as sharp as ever.

The money was used to renovate Park Square’s gazebo as well as purchase new equipment for the Paola Volunteer Fire Department. It also eventually will be used to renovate the Park Square fountain, just as Goss requested.

Goss now lives in Florida and does not travel, but his nieces Martha Tietze and Carol Bonham were guests of honor at Paola’s tree lighting ceremony last month. They even flipped the switch that illuminated Paola’s large Christmas tree, which stands in the middle of the fountain that will soon be renovated using the donated funds.

“Both my father and mother represented, in my opinion, the true Midwestern spirit and ethics that have served to identify that area of America. Therefore, we are donating these funds in their memory and all the members of our family,” Goss wrote in a letter to Everhart earlier this year.

The fire equipment has been purchased and the gazebo project is complete. The fountain is set to be renovated in 2009.
