The presidential election seemed to be the top story across the country in 2008, but Miami County had a couple interesting races of its own.

In April, the Paola City Council got a new look, as newcomer Pete Bell beat incumbent Michael Hamilton 99 votes to 73 votes.

Bell owns Bell Brothers Enterprises, teaches karate and co-owns Gail’s Glass & Collectibles. Hamilton was Paola’s postmaster before retiring this year.

Voters were back at the polls in November, this time in record numbers. The national presidential election and several local races brought the voters out in large groups as county officials worked hard to make sure things went smoothly.

Miami County Sheriff Frank Kelly maintained his position with a department he has worked for all but two of his 22 years in law enforcement. He was selected as an undersheriff in 1994 and later that year became sheriff after the death of Sheriff Ken Davis.

Kelly defeated first-time Democratic challenger Herbert West III in the November general election and Republican challengers Jim Mitzner and Joseph Rogers in the August primary election.

Rogers is a former Paola and Fort Scott police officer. Mitzner previously worked for the sheriff’s office and was shot in the leg during a traffic stop in 2003.
