Three years ago, Paola voters chose to renew a 1/2-cent sales tax to fund four city projects. Those voters got to watch two of those projects take place in 2008, with both expected to wrap up next month.

The first is the complete renovation to the Paola Community Center, including new bathrooms, a new elevator and new seating in the auditorium.

Revenue from the sales tax was capped at $9 million, of which the Community Center will receive 15 percent, or $1.35 million. Some of that money was spent on roof repairs last year. The city previously had agreed to provide $40,000 for the roof if the Community Center board could match it, but when that did not succeed, officials decided to pay the $131,563 in roof repairs using sales tax money.

After architectural fees, bond interest, bond issuance fees and the roof project were deducted from the total revenue, the city realized it had about $885,000 to work with on the project, which led to the contract with Legacy Contractors for $812,050.

The project is expected to be complete next month.

The other project is the construction of a Paola Justice Center on North Pearl Street for the Paola Police Department.

The building will include a courtroom, dispatch center, conference room, interview rooms, offices, locker rooms, armory, fitness room, evidence storage, booking area and other features.

The city and Altmar Inc. agreed on a more-than-$3 million contract for the project. An open house is scheduled for 1 p.m. Jan. 25.

Besides the Justice Center and Community Center projects, the 1/2-cent sales tax also will eventually fund renovations to Paola Free Library and Paola City Hall.
