Paola Police Chief Dave Smail and his fellow officers have waited a long time for this.

Department officials are making preparations to move into the newly constructed Justice Center on North Pearl Street. The department currently shares a building at 19 E. Peoria St. with the Paola Volunteer Fire Department and Paola City Hall.

The Justice Center also will be the new location for city court, as well as Paola City Council meetings.

Smail said the furniture should be in place by the end of the year, and the department’s move-in date is tentatively set for Jan. 6, with the first city court proceedings taking place Jan. 8.

A public open house also is tentatively scheduled to take place Jan. 25. The dedication is set for 1 p.m., and it will be followed by guided tours. The public is invited to attend.
The Paola Justice Center will include a courtroom, dispatch center, conference room, interview rooms, offices, locker rooms, armory, fitness room, evidence storage, booking area and other features.

The city and Altmar Inc. agreed on a more-than-$3 million contract for the project.

Much of the Justice Center will be funded by a 1/2-cent sales tax renewed by voters in 2005. The tax also is funding renovations to the Paola Community Center and eventual improvements to Paola City Hall and Paola Free Library.
