Despite having a slow start on the offensive end, scoring just two points in the first quarter, the Paola boys' basketball team hit the court with an aggressive pressure defense that also prevented De Soto from pulling away.

Paola stayed in the game with its defense and had a chance to pull off the victory, leading by four points (33-29) with 4 minutes, 36 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Answering with  pair of quick 3-pointers and an offensive rebound with the inside basket, De Soto turned the four-point deficit into a four-point lead (37-33) in just 1:27.

De Soto hit two more baskets and added six free throws down the stretch to hand Paola a 47-35 loss.

Travis Hayes led Paola offensively with 13 points. Jonathan Pomatto hit double figures with 11 points.

De Soto hit its first three 3-point attempts, causing the Paola girls to turn up their defense a notch Friday night.

That nudge was all it took for the Panthers to issue a defensive response, countering with a 13-0 run to take a 17-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. Paola would not let its guard down the rest of the night, running the floor for a convincing 62-38 victory to run its record to 7-0.

Four players hit double figures for the Panthers. Rachel Hanf led the way with 14 points. Ashlee Johnson had 11 points. Rachel Schmidt and Taelor Karr each had 10 points.
