The Spring Hill City Council approved land acquisition for the construction of the aquatic center project recently approved by voters. On Thursday, the council met in executive session and decided to use 12.76 acres on the west side of the intersection of Webster Street and Sycamore Drive for the project. City Administrator Jonathan Roberts said the site was selected because of its central location in the city. “The way that its laid out, its centrally located,” Roberts said. “Eighty percent of the city can ride a bicycle or walk to it.” The city purchased the land from Frank Molley for $275,000. On Nov. 4, residents of Spring Hill passed a half-cent sales tax increase to fund the new aquatic center and development of a new lakeside park. Citizens were asked to vote on two questions concerning the aquatic center and the city’s lake property. The ballot questions faced more opposition from citizens in Johnson County than in Miami County. Some of plans for the project include a zero-depth entry pool, slides, lazy river and a concession stand. In addition to the approval of land acquisition, the city council also approved bids from Aquatic Designs Consultants Inc. and Ponzer-Youngquist, P.A., an engineering and land survey company. The design services for the project are estimated to be more than $260,000. The funds will be drawn from the Capitol Improvement Building Fund. The amount is reimbursable upon the insurance of the final bond. Ponzer-Youngquist, P.A. asked the city for $6,750 for the project. Funds will be drawn from the Capital Improvement Fund.
