During a time when many districts in the state are facing a financial crisis, the Spring Hill USD 230 Board of Education believes it necessary to communicate with the public, regardless of the cost. Board members Monday approved the hiring of an information coordinator for the district. The coordinator will communicate with media outlets and the public about issues regarding the district. Superintendent Barton Goering said 29 applicants were screened and three people were called in for formal interviews. Board member Eric Valaika said the survey process was very thorough. “We ended up with two very good candidates,” Valaika said. Board member Nels Anderson asked how the new position would fit into the school’s budget. Goering said the contract would be for 85 days, or the remainder of the school year. Vice President Eric Boyle talked about the district struggling with capitol outlays and a state budget, but said a new position was necessary. “It’s a very scary time to be spending any money,” Boyle said. “But at the same time, we look to our community for permission about what we are doing and what’s going on with our schools.” Boyle said a lot of things are happening in the legislature and throughout the country. “It seems to me that it’s going to be even more important than ever that we communicate what’s going on in this district and how we’re spending money,” Boyle said. “When the state finalizes that budget, that’s what it is. If we have to make cuts, we’re going have to communicate why we did that.” Board member Paul Sowers agreed with Boyle on the idea of hiring a specialist. “I feel that it’s important that we communicate with our patriots,” Sowers said. “I think we need to do the best job possible with getting our information out there.” Chuck Willis said it may be difficult to think about spending money, but good things are occurring in the district that the public needs to be aware of. “Some of those things are like maintenance, and at some point, you’re going to have to do that,” Willis said. More information about the new position will be released by the district later this week. In other business, Wayne Burke has been named assistant superintendent, and Joseph Meyers will retire in July.
