Spring Hill uses free throws to beat Paola boys PDF Print E-mail

Strong free-throw shooting by Spring Hill prevented the Paola Middle School eighth-grade boys’ varsity basketball team from pulling off a come-from-behind win on the road.

Spring Hill sank five out of six from the line in the fourth quarter, preserving a 35-27 victory against Paola on Thursday.

Spring Hill outscored Paola 11-7 in the first quarter. The Panthers tied the score at the half with a 7-3 advantage in the second quarter.

Cody Lillich scored six points in the third quarter to propel the Mavericks on a 14-7 run. Spring Hill closed out the win with a 7-6 edge in the fourth quarter. Lillich finished with a game-high 14 points.

Matt Petelin led the Panthers with nine points. LaMont Neely scored eight points.

Other players scoring for Paola were Dylan Queen, Kyle Johnson and Peter Timpe.

Matt Smith scored nine points for Spring Hill. Lake Johnson had six points.

Despite a late run by Paola, Spring Hill held on to win the junior varsity eighth-grade game 34-31.

Nile Kahn and Tyler Crabtree combined for 22 points to lead Spring Hill. Kahn had 12 points. Crabtree finished with 10 points. Alec Weaver anchored the defense with four steals.

Matthew Bergman led Paola with six points. Nick Gochenour and Steven Beets each had five points. Other players scoring for the Panthers were Travis Hoehn, Tucker Klaasmeyer, Travis Funk, Michael Jensen, Barrett Davis and Brandon Haggerty.
