Madison Kemper never really considered herself a good artist.

When Holy Trinity Catholic School teacher Jessica Schneider asked her fourth-grade class to draw pictures promoting the protection of the environment, Madison decided she would just do her best and be as colorful as possible.

After a brief moment of thought, Madison decided to draw a sparkling jewel and write the phrase: “Kansas is a gem. Don’t spoil it.” After a little help from her teacher and a few modifications of her own, Madison had her picture complete, surrounded by bright pastel shades of orange, green, pink, blue, purple and yellow. The picture also included the words “Keep Kansas clean” and “Remember to recycle.”

That was last fall, and it wasn’t until Friday that Madison found out her picture was one of the runners-up in a statewide contest and therefore was featured on the back of the 2009 Kansas Don’t Spoil It! Calendar put out by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

The calendar includes pictures drawn by students from across the state. Each picture has a message promoting the importance of caring for the environment.

It’s a message that suits Schneider’s class, which Madison says recycles their classroom material.

Madison said her parents were very proud of her, and so were her classmates.

“They congratulated me,” she said.

Despite all the publicity, Madison said she was still surprised by the honor, since drawing has never been her speciality.

“I used crayons and some colored pencils. Usually, I’m not that good of a colorer,” she said with a smile.
