The store located at 123 S. Main St., has apparel, helmets, jackets, gloves, accessories and parts for street bikes, dirt bikes, all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles. Bob Metcalf is the general manager for the business, which was created by his son, Matt Metcalf, five years ago. His son was involved in a motorcycle accident with his friend and realized that they were not wearing any protective gear. “I always tell people we don’t sell the machines, but we sell everything that goes with them,” Metcalf said. “We are primarily an Internet business with a walk-in store. We are probably 85 percent Internet, and because of that we sell all over the world.” The Spring Hill business does not sell motorcycles. This is something that separates PowerSPORTS4less from other shops. Metcalf said he tries not to sell items at high prices. “I run my business the way I run my life,” he said. “It’s called ‘do the right thing.’” He said he has a wide customer base, including married couples, engineers and doctors. “There are a lot of people that are living their dream,” Metcalf said. PowerSPORTS4less has sent items to France, New Zealand, Canada, Australia and Greece. He said snowmobile items are the biggest sellers right now. “Motorcycle shops and apparel shops are very slow at this time of year, but I’m very busy because I sell snowmobile apparel and accessories.” Metcalf said he is very pleased with the success the business is having during a struggling economy. Metcalf said motorcycles use less gas than cars and trucks. “When gas prices went up, that was a huge boost to our business,” Metcalf said. “Many people were not thinking about riding a motorcycle, but are now thinking about motorcycles because of the gas prices.” One of the popular items Metcalf sells is the Nolan N103. The helmet is Bluetooth capable and is able to receive communication. He said first priority should be wearing a helmet. “We really emphasize that,” Metcalf said. “If you don’t get a helmet from us, get one from some place and wear a good one.” The walk-in business has been very successful for PowerSPORTS4less, despite being in an area that does not have a lot of traffic on a one-way street. “We’ve been in business long enough for people to find us,” Metcalf said. “We’re getting a lot of word of mouth referrals. We do a lot of business with riding clubs.” Metcalf rides the Can-Am Spyder, a three-wheel vehicle. Metcalf said he was a motorcycle rider when he was younger and stopped when he had a family. “Now my kids are grown and out of the house, and I’m back to riding again,” Metcalf said. “That’s a big target market for us, the people that rode early or always wanted to.” He said riding a motorcycle can be dangerous, but people are becoming more aware on the highways. PowerSPORTS4less is a sponsor of the Midwest Motorcycle Training Center and provides the gear for the organization. The school is licensed by the state of Kansas and is a commercial driving school specializing in motorcycle instruction.
