LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, legend Michael Jordan and the great Wilt Chamberlain have nothing on the Paola Middle School seventh-grade junior varsity boys’ basketball team.

At least not for one night.

Paola bested all of their career field goal shooting averages Thursday night.

The Panthers shot 54.3 percent from the floor in a 51-8 victory on the road against the Ottawa Whirlwinds, sinking 25 of 46 field goal attempts.

Chamberlain is already in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Jordan figures to enter the hall next year. James and Bryant are well on their way.

Thursday night, the hall of fame night belonged to the Paola seventh-grade boys.

Chamberlain, who played for the University of Kansas and later went on to star in the National Basketball Association with the Los Angeles Lakers, shot 54 percent in his career.

None of the other stars are even close to what the Paola boys did at Ottawa.

Jordan, a six-time NBA champion with the Chicago Bulls, shot 49.7 percent for his career.

James, the face of the NBA’s next generation, is shooting 50 percent on the season. He has a 47 percent career field goal percentage.

Bryant, a three-time NBA champion, has a 49.7 percent career field goal average.

Not too many teams shoot 50 percent in a game, at any level.

Middle school teams sure don’t.

Paola had one of those rare nights, for any team, let alone the junior varsity seventh-graders, where the shots were falling at a record clip.

Six players shot 60 percent or better from the floor. Four shot 80 percent or better.

Kyler Blankenbiller made both of his two field goals, shooting 100 percent. David Turner made five of six attempts, shooting 83 percent. Gunnar Karr and Seth Slayman each sank four of five field goal attempts, shooting an even 80 percent. Kevin Benton made two of three shots, shooting 67 percent. Connor Patton hit three of five shots for 60 percent. Dominick Ramirez shot 40 percent, sinking two of five field goal attempts.
Cayman Long (2-6) and Brennan Haley (1-3) sank 33 percent of their shots.
