Close games are starting to sting a little bit for the Paola Middle School eighth-grade junior varsity boys’ basketball team. Paola has been right in the battle, losing games to Ottawa and Lexington Trail by a total of six points. The difference Thursday was a single point. Nick Gochenour made two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and the Paola boys came close to catching Ottawa in a one-point, 33-32, loss Thursday. Paola outscored Ottawa 6-4 in the first quarter and 10-5 in the second quarter, but let a 16-9 lead slip away during a 12-4 third-quarter run by the Whirlwinds. Matthew Bergman scored 10 points to lead Paola. Barrett Davis and Gochenour each had six points. Other players scoring for Paola were Tucker Klaasmeyer, Travis Hoehn, Clay Rogers and Steven Beets. Joe Pomatto led Paola on the boards with seven rebounds, including five on the defensive end. He added two steals. Bergman and Davis each had four rebounds. Brandon Haggerty and Beets each had two rebounds and one assist. Rogers had one assist. Lexington Trail used an 8-4 fourth-quarter advantage to beat Paola by five points Jan. 13, 33-28. Paola led 10-8 at the end of the first quarter and fell behind by four points at the half after a 7-1 second-quarter run by Lexington Trail. The Panthers fought their way back into it with a 13-10 edge in the third quarter to make it a one-point game, 25-24. Paola hit just one free throw and one three-pointer in the fourth quarter and came up short. Gochenour led Paola with eight points. Klaasmeyer and Beets each scored six points. Other players scoring for the Panthers were Haggerty, Hoehn, Rogers and Bergman.
