Deb Weatherbie, a former Paola elementary school and gifted teacher, has taken over duties as the youth services coordinator at the Paola Free Library, a position held until recently by Elizabeth Trigg, who left to become the Osawatomie library director.

Library director Rosie King said Weatherbie was selected from 18 candidates because of her teaching background.

“We also liked her music background, too, because kids love music. Right now, Deb is taking over in the middle of the year, so there will be a lot of getting used to normal routines and to our collection.”

Weatherbie observed the children’s story hour Jan. 6, participated in a trial story hour and took over the preschooler story time Tuesday.

“I want to stick with the routines the children and parents are accustomed to and then maybe make a few gradual changes. I want to take it slowly. I do like the story time routine,” Weatherbie said.

The freedom she will have has Weatherbie excited.

“I do like that. And, I’m excited about overseeing the summer enrichment program,” she said.

“I felt like I could fit right in. I’ve known Rosie and the library staff for a long time. They are a good group of people to work with. I was also impressed with the thoroughness of the selection process,” Weatherbie said.
King said Weatherbie would continue the duties held by Trigg, including planning and doing story hours and designing programs for older children.

“She will also select books and other materials for the children’s collection,” King said.

Weatherbie, who started teaching in 1980, taught for almost 15 years in kindergarten, first and second grades, and gifted. She began at North School, moved to Hillsdale and took over the gifted program housed at Sunflower Elementary.

“I was even taking the gifted program to Holy Trinity and all around,” Weatherbie said.

“I really am very anxious to start working with the children.”
