KC Wolf made a stop at Spring Hill Middle School on Monday, not to cheer but to award sixth-graders for a video about healthy living.

The mascot for the Kansas City Chiefs arrived with two cheerleaders, Liz and Annie Epp. Students at SHMS made a video for a contest sponsored by the Midwest Dairy Council. One of the prizes from the contest was a visit from KC Wolf and cheerleaders. Technology teacher Tom Careago helped coordinate the video that promoted good health.

“It allowed the whole school to be involved and get the benefit to listen about health,”  Careago said. “It’s good for them to hear from someone that is a healthy person and has a job where your constantly moving around.”

The video had a theme from the film Rocky and featured Macy Careago running with the Kansas City skyline in the foreground along with other landmarks such as Union Station. During the video her classmates were training her in the gym and in the meat locker.

“When we ran at different places it was really fun,” Macy said. “I’m doing track this year and other sports, so I’m in shape and physical fitness is important.”

During the assembly the man inside the KC Wolf costume unveiled himself for the students. Under the gray fur was Dan Meers. He talked about health and how important it is for him to be physically fit after the students watched a video of KC Wolf’s highlights. Meers has been with the Chiefs for 20 years.

“Being a mascot is a lot of fun, but it takes a lot of energy,” Meers said. “One of the most important pars of our job is to stay in shape.”

Sixth-grader Danny Hodge was picked from the crowd to wear the costume that weighs 30 to 35 pounds.
“The body you got right now is the body you’re going to have for the rest of your life,” Meers said.

Some of the health benefits mentioned by Meers included improving self-esteem, combating chronic disease, building muscles, strengthening the heart and lungs, energy, and fun.

The eight-grade pep band and cheerleaders also performed at the assembly. The students presented an award which included a picture and gigantic boxing gloves for KC Wolf.
