Thanks to The UPS Store in Paola, several U.S. military men and women serving overseas this year will know just how much they are missed by family and friends back home.

When Debi Wright of Paola watched her 25-year-old son, Andrew, ship off to Iraq last November with his fellow National Guardsmen, she knew they’d keep in touch. She talks with her son almost every day via e-mail, and she sometimes gets to use the Skype system to talk with and see her son on the computer for short periods of time.
Still, for a mother, it’s never enough.

“Technology is amazing,” she said. “But if I don’t talk with him for a few days it leaves too much to mom’s imagination.”

Making sure Andrew realizes how much he’s missed, Debi and her fellow family members have sent several packages overseas, including three boxes at Christmas.

“One weighed 37 pounds,” she said. “It had Christmas gifts, a small tree with lights, a stocking and things he can take with him on the run.”

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, Debi was already thinking of something to send her son when she ran into Michelle Pixler at The UPS Store.

Pixler had already helped Debi in the past get all her packages prepared before mailing them through the U.S. Postal Service overseas. This time, Pixler described a new program this year called Sealed With a Kiss.

Pixler said it’s her hope to reach as many servicemen and women as possible, so The UPS Store has agreed to pay the postage for any Valentine’s Day or thank you card addressed to someone stationed overseas.

Debi jumped at the offer, and she plans to mail extra letters this week to reach those serving with her son.

“I don’t think people realize how much being able to get something and keep it means to them,” she said.
“Everybody is very supportive when they first leave, but that tends to decrease.”

Andrew may get some leave time in March, and he is expected to end his tour of duty in October. Until then, Debi plans to utilize all different forms of communication available to her to keep in touch with her son.
