Plans for Paola Commons, a 58-acre proposed commercial development southeast of the Baptiste Drive and U.S. Highway 169 interchange, have been put on hold until a decision is made on the rezoning of the property.

The land is part of 240 acres in Paola’s growth area that city planners have already voted to rezone from Business Park to Thoroughfare Access. County officials, though, have not yet made a decision on the issue, which then would have to be approved by the Paola City Council before being finalized.

Several residents in the area have complained about the restrictions they’ve faced because of the Business Park zoning, and the Paola Commons development would not meet the requirements of the city’s land development ordinance unless the property is rezoned to Thoroughfare Access.

Initial plans for Paola Commons shows three lots just over 1 acre in size with access off of Baptiste Drive, and an additional lot about 54 acres in size that could be developed at a later time.

City planners tabled the issue at the Jan. 20 Paola Planning Commission meeting in the hopes that the rezoning would be finalized before the next planning meeting on Feb. 17.
