Monday night was a solemn evening for Paola USD 368 school board members, as they got a beginning breakdown of what budget cuts stand before them and what future cuts loom down the road.

If parents, students and taxpayers haven’t been following the crisis facing school districts across the state, now is the time to get involved. Paola school board members could be making official decisions on some cuts as early as next school board meeting.

Although the complete breakdown of the financial shortfall won’t be known until state Legislators solidify a plan that outlines the level of cuts to state funding, educators have little time to waste. Decisions on fee increases and the future of staffing must be made sooner rather than later.

Proposed cuts include eliminating several city bus routes, cutting staffing positions and raising fees for driver’s education and lunch, among other things.

Concerned parents should contact school officials and plan to attend next month’s school board meeting to stay up to date with the situation. This financial crisis is very real, and projections say it will continue to worsen over the next couple of years. The fallout from the necessary cuts will affect everyone.

This is the perfect story for a newspaper to cover. Find someone who works there who owns a calculator, and do the math for us. Show us what it costs for various extra services etc. Show us what it costs the district for a H.Trinity kid to participate in sports, and explain to us just how the savings will be realized if they are prevented from doing so.
Don't just lap up the stuff the school board is feeding you. Independently verify it. If ever there were an absolute example of what a community newspaper should do, this is it.
