The Royal Rangers of Cross Point Assembly of God, 1016 N. Pearl St. in Paola, really are for the birds.

This chapter, led by Commander Don Walters and consisting of school-age boys up to 12 years old, has taken on a project that benefits both people and their feathered friends. Each of the boys recently completed construction of a bird house and together they plan to install 18 of them along the bird walk at Hillsdale Lake.

The idea came from Cross Point member Dave Connell, who noticed that the bird sanctuary at Hillsdale Lake had been “torn up” and needed work.

Connell said he had noticed that the bird houses along the bird walk had deteriorated or had been vandalized.

“I asked Don if that might be a project the boys would be interested in, and he said, ‘Oh, yes,’” Connell said.

Walters, Connell and other volunteers worked with the boys, showing them how to use various woodworking tools.

“We used screwdrivers and saws and sanders,” Jesse Gallagher, 12. “It took about one session to stain them.”

Because their time is limited to regular meeting sessions, it took awhile to complete the construction phase of the project.

“It took about two or three weeks,” Gabe Bruza, 10, said.

Walters said the Royal Rangers program gives boys a sense of belonging, teaches them about serving others, and helps guide them as they develop  into godly men. They also have fun along the way, with pinewood derbies and camping trips.

In addition to the bird house project, they recently delivered food baskets to at least 70 households for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and they occasionally mow lawns when needed.

“We like to keep them busy,” Walters said.
