Private Kennith O. Baldwin was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943 right after his junior year at Spring Hill High School. If he lived to graduate, he would have been part of the 1944 class. Baldwin was declared missing in action Oct. 26 in France. His sister, Catherine Welch, along with her husband, Milton Welch, donated a 48-star flag that was on his casket, a Purple Heart medal and a picture of Baldwin in his uniform. Her husband, Milton, is a Vietnam veteran and member of the American Legion Cole-Post 350. “It’s going to be hard for me, but we want it done,” Welch said before the meeting. Welch said she was 11 years old when he was drafted. She said there were nine members of her family involved in the armed forces. She said she was proud of the courageous efforts of her brother and other family members. Baldwin is buried at the Hillsdale Cemetery. Catherine said her father, Frank Baldwin, brother Ivan Baldwin and uncle John Baldwin are also buried at the site. There has been memorial services at the location for the past three years. Jim Wilson of the Historical Society said the meeting held by the organization is a great way to get people interested in Spring Hill’s past. He said there’s always history behind something. “I think this was a great way of honoring our soldiers and not forgetting those in the past,” Wilson said. “That service is what unites us.” Other activities included registry from the old Spring Hill Hotel with scripted signatures. Original copies of the Spring Hill New Era from 1883 to 1930 were also donated by the Historical Society. Wilson said citizen Vance Stiles found a copy of his birth announcement in a 1929 newspaper.
