High school juniors in the upper half of their class scholastically are eligible to make application to attend Kansas American Legion Boys State. Applications for Boys State are available at the counselors’ office at Paola High School. Contact Brett Nisse.

The 72nd annual American Legion Boys State of Kansas will be held on the campus of Kansas State University from May 31 through June 6.

An individual or organization may sponsor an eligible high school junior boy through Miami Post 156 Paola American Legion.

Bob Harrington is chairman of Miami Post 156 Boys State. He can be reached by calling (913) 294-3730.

“We usually have five sponsors annually for youths wanting to attend,” Harrington said. “The recipients of the available sponsorships are selected by a committee including the school counselors.”

The program fee is $300, of which each youth attending is expected to pay $40 and the sponsor $260. Those attending also pay for their own transportation to and from K-State.

“Those attending Boys State learn about leadership by creating city, county and state governments from the ground up,” Harrington said. “A computerized economic simulation monitors the individual’s progress. In addition, youths learn group dynamics, the art of compromise and the importance of completing tasks assigned by peers and counselors, as well as making friends that in some cases have lasted a lifetime.”

Deadline is March 15 for making application for Boys State at the Paola High School counselor’s office.
